About

This course provides staff with the knowledge, confidence and practical skills needed to recognise, respond to and reduce risks related to radicalisation and extremism within supported accommodation settings. Young people aged 16–18 may be particularly vulnerable due to trauma, identity struggles, loneliness, online influence or a need for belonging. This course helps staff support them safely, calmly and without judgement. The training is fully aligned with the Prevent Duty, Working Together to Safeguard Children, the Supported Accommodation Regulations 2023 and Ofsted expectations. It explains what radicalisation is, how extremist groups target young people and how online spaces, memes and private chat groups can be used to manipulate emotions and beliefs. Staff learn how to spot early warning signs, understand vulnerability indicators and notice behavioural patterns without making assumptions. A strong emphasis is placed on safeguarding rather than investigation. Staff are guided on how to respond with professional curiosity, how to record concerns accurately and when to escalate to safeguarding leads, Prevent or Channel. The course also explores how to maintain trust and emotional safety with young people during difficult conversations. The final module focuses on resilience and protective factors. Staff learn how to strengthen belonging, self-esteem, critical thinking, identity development, and positive relationships—key buffers against extremist influence. Practical examples and realistic scenarios help staff apply learning to day-to-day interactions. By the end of this course, staff will feel confident recognising risk, supporting vulnerable young people and contributing to a safe, inclusive and resilient environment.
