About
This training course is designed for Support Workers, Key Workers, and Managers working with young people aged 16–18 in Supported Accommodation. It explores how trauma, loss, and early adversity influence behaviour, relationships, and development, helping staff build environments where young people feel safe, respected, and understood. Learners will gain practical strategies to apply trauma-informed principles in daily practice, understanding triggers, responding calmly to distress, and promoting recovery through empathy, consistency, and trust. The course introduces the six foundations of trauma-informed care: Safety, Trustworthiness, Choice, Collaboration, Empowerment, and Cultural Sensitivity, and shows how to embed these in support planning, safeguarding, and team practice. Through real-world examples and reflection, participants will learn to view challenging behaviour as communication rather than defiance, recognising the impact of past experiences on present actions. The training also focuses on staff wellbeing and reflective supervision, supporting emotional resilience and preventing burnout. By the end of the course, learners will be able to: Recognise trauma responses and apply appropriate de-escalation strategies. Create psychologically safe, consistent, and empowering environments. Strengthen safeguarding and multi-agency collaboration using trauma-informed principles. Reflect on their own practice to promote self-awareness and resilience. Aligned with the Children Act 1989 & 2004, Supported Accommodation (England) Regulations 2023, and Working Together to Safeguard Children 2023, this course supports Ofsted and local authority compliance.
