About
This comprehensive one hour online training course equips staff in supported accommodation with the knowledge and confidence to act as an Appropriate Adult for young people aged sixteen to eighteen. When a young person is arrested, detained, or interviewed by police they have a legal right under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 to be supported by a trained and trusted adult. In supported accommodation settings this responsibility often falls to staff who play a vital role in safeguarding welfare and ensuring fair treatment. Through practical examples, legal guidance, and trauma informed strategies this course explores how to protect a young person’s rights while promoting calm communication, emotional safety, and professional boundaries. Learners will understand how trauma, care experience, and vulnerability can influence behaviour during police contact and how to respond with empathy and confidence. The training also covers accurate recording, reflective supervision, and effective multi agency working to support joined up safeguarding practice. By the end of the course participants will be able to explain the purpose of the Appropriate Adult role, identify when attendance is required, apply clear communication and de escalation techniques, record and report safeguarding concerns correctly, and collaborate with police, social workers, and youth offending teams. Aligned with the Children Act 1989 and 2004, the Supported Accommodation England Regulations 2023, Working Together to Safeguard Children 2023, and Ofsted inspection expectations, this training provides clear evidence of staff competence, accountability, and legal compliance. Audience: Support Workers, Key Workers, Managers, and Designated Safeguarding Leads in Supported Accommodation
